The main point of the merging posts is to prevent people from building up their post count by double posting, which is generally annoying in any thread.
As such, your latest suggestion really doesn't work. I understand your frustration, but maybe there is an answer...
How about this? I create a page that displays a list of posts (in search result format) where your username is mentioned. Added as a link at the top, people can view their "mentions" when they log in. Since quotes contain usernames, this should be easy to do.
