Why is everyone freaking out about Syria all of a sudden? Assad's regime and terrorist groups have been killing civilians for years. Nobody done anything about it then, but as soon as they use gas, everyone is eager to step in.
With the cloud of suspicion hanging over trump's head regarding just how much his campaign owed to Russian interference, even trump knows he has to put on the appearance of protecting traditional American geopolitical role and taking a hardline against Russian interests.
The Russians, on the other hand, are far more canny players of this game. They will intentionally scream, holler, protest, act as if trump just murdered their mothers, so as to give trump cover and deflect attention from the fact that in the grand scheme of things, the donald is effectively doing Russia geostrategic bidding and allowing Russia to regain semblance of preeminence in western Eurasia.
