How do you know there was nothing before the big bang? How do we know the universe didn't always exist?

The "how can something come from nothing?" is a strawman argument that creationists always like to use (ironically, as I've noted before, to argue that their god made the universe from nothing). I'm not saying that you're a secret creationist trolling the forum, but don't be surprised if others get this idea from this statement.
