Thank you for posting that link. EVEN SHE says in the story that was DANGEROUS and really not the wisest thing to do.
I am sure she reported it or someone at the gas station did, the cops came to take the report, and I am quite sure any sane cop lectured her.
There is no shame in giving up an object even when it is no fault of your own. That is why we have police.
Criminals the vast majority of the time simply want the object. Confronting someone you don't know raises the risk of injury or death.
