The high Trump polling negatives prior to the election have become the 'resistance' (for lack of a better term) we are seeing now. Kinda obvious with her equivalent polling negatives that Hillary would be beset with a similar/identical result had she won.
IOWs, this effect is an inherent feature of the RNC/DNC nominating strategies of going with candidates with high polling negatives. Since this a unique 'feature' of the last election in that both candidates were essentially equally hated, and in election cycles in the past the parties had the brain power God gave gnats to realize putting up candidates with such high negatives was a bad idea.
There may not, in fact be anything unusual going on then. Had Dewey and Truman each had grotesquely high negatives in their era, might have seen pretty much the same thing playing out then as we do now, just through the 'prism' of the 1950s.
I suppose it would be too much to ask that in future maybe the dems would want to look for candidates with the characteristics of high positives amongst potential dem voters, and a neutral (instead of negative) impression with the other side, but it would be strongly preferable regardless of the consternation adopting such a radical strategy might cause.

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
