It's about brutality. Like killing her family, dragging her to your house, shaving her head, holding her prisoner for a month, and threatening to throw her out on the street if she doesn't go along with your plans. Yep, that sounds about right. And the bible does not always see Adam as being to blame, as has been pointed out.
I know you want to see this book in as good a light as possible, and if it doesn't specifically say something is a certain way in plain text, you just ignore the implications of it. Because thinking that the guys are just bringing these girls into their homes and marrying them as an act of mercy because they have no other options, when it should be obvious there are other options. A war was going on....that the former Egyptian slaves started. If they wanted to allow for refugee camps, or a migration to other areas, or other things to allow civilians to remain together and have a normal existence.
But no, they had orders from on high to slaughter the locals because their god told them they could have the land, and loved the smell of blood.
