Sadly, Brian, class is exactly the issue. Or rather, self-identification with a group. Yes, many people will examine their circumstances and decide what they have to do to change them if they want to change them. Others look for scapegoats and remember that:

It is not the fault of various minority groups that the hot dog cookers or pizza throwers did not go to college and acquire useful job skills. But it is oh-so-much-easier to blame THE OTHER for their failings than to look in the mirror and call themselves a "schmuck."
