The GOP has, for the last 50+ years or so, been the party of the fearful who desperately cling to a nostalgic vision of America that never existed in the first place. The reason why South Park's Member Berries joke works is because it's true.
'member when America was strong?
'member when America was white?
'member when women and minorities knew their place?
'member when the poor simply died and weren't propped up by your hard work?
'member when foreigners didn't steal our jobs?
The GOP platform, for generations, has been fascist. Politely so, with dog whistle terminology and false equivalences. And politeness leads to legitimacy, because, hey, it's just an opinion, and it tugs at white people's fear (to those with power, a move towards equilibrium seems like oppression), and it's not like literal Nazis are going to take to the street and kill someone....
...oh.
So, yeah, this is the end result of the GOP platform. When you're conditioned to fear everyone not like you, you eventually lash out.
