Nor where the erected to memorialize patriots of our country who (while flawed and representative of their time, like Washington and Jefferson and Franklin, etc) sacrificed to make our country a better and safer place. Statues and memorials to those like Robert E. Lee and the figureheads of the confederacy were largely erected by people in the 20th century looking to support them and give a middle finger to those fighting for equality. These aren't statues from 200 years ago that are time-honored traditions. They aren't memorials to commemorate the fallen and their sacrifice. They don't honor patriots, they honor traitors and the treasonous.
It is somewhat amusing to see all of the white nationalist snowflakes getting triggered by the loss of their bigoted heroes from the public square
^^^^^^ SO MUCH THIS!
There is no excuse to keep up engraved words under those statues, much less the statues themselves that were clearly put up to honor those who fought to keep a very vile and cruel institution.
We can teach history without glorifying a horrible past.
I mean, it isn't like Germans don't know about WW2 and Hitler even though they don't have any statues commemorating Hitler and the Nazis.
