You mean like people from the KKK being Republican and people from the BP being Democrat? Does identity politics mean that you lean a certain way politically because of the group you are in?
I think far too many people fail to understand history when trying to equate the two. One is a group promoting oppression, the other is a group responding to oppression.
I am not talking about this year, or the past 5 years, but our collective history.
Far too many even if not bigots, still do not want to face that the data shows that between blacks and whites, our economic and justice system hurts blacks more negatively on average.
"Identity politics" is a new term promoted by the right to muddle the issue and justify blaming. The KKK are the only "identity politics". "Black Lives Matter" are not saying blacks are superior, but "we matter too".
America has not faced its roots of racism, even today. Those whom understand what is going on would love it nothing more than to be about wallet issues and nothing else. But the left are not the ones ignoring the inequity. It should be about afordable living for all, urban, suburban and rural.
The fact that 50 years after the days of segregation we have a president pandering to the worst in society says we still have a problem.
