Well, the problem for a long time has been we are still stuck far too much on this bullshit idea that the rich will end up on cat food if they pay more in taxes.
We will never have a perfect system, and pay inequity has to exist to a degree, just like in evolution there is a give and take. But certainly it is lopsided now, way beyond what is manageable, and it is certainly not ethical or moral at this point.
The poor cannot afford a lawyer like 45 can. And if anyone has ever talked to a public defender, they can tell you that it is impossible to defend them in the same way a rich person who can pay to have a private lawyer focus on them solely.
I don't want this used to make the word "capitalism" the issue, the issue is inequity, not the private sector itself. I have pointed out closed societies that have dictators and 1 party states that capitalize off off the global market too.
I'd say the gap is what causes this, and the challenge to those well off would be, what would you want for you, if you were accused of the same thing, but didn't have the money you do now.
There is a lack of compassion in America for those who are not so lucky, and outside nationality, to me, it is an embarrassment to my species.
We just had another group of frat boys out of LSU arrested for hazing where a guy ended up dead for drinking too much. I bet, even if some do get convicted, they would not be treated the same way as this guy.
