In the books I read, connected to the Cthulu mythos, it was spelled both ways. Azathoth is not necessarily the ONLY way to spell it. For example Cthulu can also be spelled Cutlu, or Cuthulu because it is meant only as a phonetic representation of an unpronouncable echo from dimensions that drive men insane.
