What you call 'chips' are properly called 'crisps'.
Right now, I'm wondering how you couldn't have already known this.

Then what is a cookie to you? Or do you even have them?
We have these biscuits called 'chocolate chip cookies' that are not cookies at all and are actually biscuits (although you'd call them cookies).
Confusing, yes?
It's the Britishian way.
Chips are fat french fries. And fat french fries must never be called "fat french fies" (so please call me a "cunthead")... they must be always referred to as "chips".
Thin french fries are always called simply "french fries". And usually unless we're copying Americans we never call them "fries" but always either "French Fries" or just "chips." French Fries can be referred to as "chips" but chips as in big-fat-assed-chips must never ever be referred to as "fries" or "french fries".
Potato chips are always called "crisps." Except cheesy poofs that are usually referred to as either "Wotsits" or "cheesy puffs".
To have a takeout is to have a "takeaway".
To sit on one's fanny means to sit on one's vagina.
You probably know the rest.
