Nope. It's about market share!
It used to be that clergy in the RCC could marry. But their property was getting inherited by their spawn, so the RCC, in a major land grab, took the properties and forced the wives away from their husbands. And they all stood still for it. No religious or secular organization has any business forcing that kind of thing.
The great thing about the secular west at least, is that if any religious institution threatens to kick you out of that individual church who the fuck cares? You can still go to another, or start your own without regards to where you got kicked out.
So if a Christian or Muslim or Jewish Church kicks an individual out, that should not mean shit to the individual.
No, I am not talking about crime like rape or child molestation, just bullshit by the institution simply getting angry that you questioned their social norms.
The Pope is not an elected official, anymore than a Rabbi or Muslim Cleric or the Dali Lama. Those religious leaders only have power over those whom allow them to have power over them. In the free west, we have the ability to follow or leave those people.
But yea, all those religions use the economy like any other aspect of society to compete for influence.
