the sole reason this subject hasn't been explored a lot is religion, people were taught for centuries to be afraid of death, if you were raised to believe that death is just when your brain & body stop functioning, which means you don't even know you're dead.
on the other hand, if you follow a religion but you're not extremely religious, when death is near, you'd wet your pants "oh my god, I'm going to hell, I had sexual relationships outside of marriage, I didn't pray every single second for every single day, I wasted my time looking for a cure for Cancer, I should have spent my time thanking God instead of wasting it on damn science".
I've heard people cry because a relative of them died & he wasn't very religious, they didn't want him to go to hell, now that's insanity.
