It's much harder to teach them critical thinking skill once religion gets it's hooks into them, religion would die a quicker death without a conveyer belt of fresh children to ruin.
Thing is religion doesn't target only children, it targets anyone vulnerable enough, including adults who might be finding it hard to deal with the harshness of reality, and without the critical thinking skills, they can fall prey to it especially if they have been sheltered from it throughout their life.
