If the author of the book meant harm and wrote harmful directions; I think he loses all kinds of authenticity and thus: he and his book should be avoided immediately.
Holy books are not the same, they differ in their context and meanings. With more readings in them; tendency to pick one increase, or pick none, it depends on who you are.
We go to religion in the first place, because we lost all hope in humanity. So we need another non-human source. A God. If holy books like the Quran hurt some, they mean a lot to some others. So an atheist might have a bad experience with the holy text; but another disagrees.
Actually I believe it is even intended for life to be this way.
The Bible should be coming from the same source; but twisted and forged at the hands of ancient people. So it does contain the word of God; but it's mixed with dreams of the ancients.
If reading it hurt many; those many should not lose expectations in another book coming from the same source.
