Some Southerners and South-sympathizers used to try to make the case that slaves were better off under servitude. (John Wilkes Booth made such claims.) I guess rule #1 of exploitation is justify your exploitation.

I agree. Education is crucial if you want people to reach their potential. But most people value education inasmuch as it will help one get a "good job." Education is about enrichment of the mind. It's not "job training." People are so short-sighted on this. They don't understand that a workforce of enriched minds is exponentially more capable than an army of well-trained machines.
