We can't defy gravity, but we all know how to utilize it.
If some people were challenged to find a way of causing a boat to go against the wind, they will tell you that the boat has to be streamlined, but others will tell you that you have to increase the surface area of the boat for the wind to push against, and here some will tell you that goes against common sense.
But a sail does just that, it increases the surface area for the wind to push against, and then utilizes that force to go against the wind at an angle.
In a similar way, if you want to overcome the effect of gravity, you have to increase whatever you think gravity is acting on.
Most people will tell you that gravity is acting on mass. Increasing the mass to reduce the effect of gravity? It doesn't make sense, but that's roughly what has to be done.
However, it isn't 'mass' as commonly understood, that has to be increased, but whatever causes mass, which is what people don't know.
Because the same force which causes mass/inertia also causes gravity.
That's not what the text books say is it?
