I'm am not a vegan, nor do I advocate veganism, but I am still troubled the images displayed in the OP.
It could be argued that western society eats too much meat, traditionally with every meal. Pound for pound, it takes more energy to produce meat than vegetable crops. It would be one thing if animals were treated in this way to feed starving people. But it is only to fill an excess.
The utilitarians argue that animals are members of the moral community, and our treatment of them says more about our general morality than it does about our regard for animals.
