So... is God testing us to see if we will ignore all the evidence around us, in favour of whatever stories we happened to be told as a child?

He may be testing us, but if so, it's likely a test of our hubris - thinking we know much more than we do. The answer is probably much cooler than the things we come up with.

I've never felt the need to try to refute the significance of sins under Islam, or any other religion or belief system. Just sayin'.
