The problem with "independent" voters, for all their smug attitudes about how they don't get involved in dirty politics, is that they exempt themselves from the process of picking the nominees and then are stuck with whatever wins the party primaries.
And don't bother going down the rabbit hole of third parties. Those are a joke in the US.
