In reference to myself there are no tattoos to display so I didn't need wording to suggest I had something I'd want to hide. I was merely stating the standards to which I hold myself and the presumption that most people, like me, want to be seen as well-groomed, in the sense of not having attention seeking juvenile hair-cuts, and professional, in the sense of being well-dressed within generally accepted normative styles, etc.
All that said, I am a product of my generation. Attitudes do seem to be changing. When I first started working, it was suit and tie. Then in the 90's we had casual Friday's, which meant polo shirt and khakis. Eventually "corporate casual" was the norm. Now I see the kids coming into work with t-shirts, yoga pants, nose rings, and tats in full view. In my mind something's been lost in our culture - class. No one dresses up any more.
Thank you for clarifying. As I said I work in a bank and I agree that things are getting lax. One of my male tellers is constantly being told to shape up. The other one comes in as a helper on certain days but he is always in a full suit, if not the jacket but that's acceptable in Texas, and is a good contrast to my lazy one. The lazy one comes in with his long hair down like a female (I don't mind his long hair but it should be pulled back in a clean look) a beard that goes down his throat, a chain connected to his wallet, and pants that show his underwear....
