What better way to demonize porn than to tie it to a notorious serial killer? You really don't see that? Do you think it'd appeal to Christians more if he just said "I was never into porn, or Satanism or anything else. I just felt like murdering and raping a bunch of women (including a 13 year old girl)." Giving them ammunition in their war against pornography, though? Dobson got exactly what he wanted out of that interview.
I think it's safe to assume he was telling the truth when he said he liked hardcore porn, and as we saw, it certainly didn't keep him from raping anyone...
Having an excuse also made him more appealing to Christians, I'm sure. "I was hurt by the evils of pornography! But I'm taking responsibility for my actions." A politician couldn't have scripted it much better. A lot of Christians LOVE a good redemption story. Which is why so many of them vote for guys like Donald Trump and Newt Gingrich (that, and it's the best way to screw over the poor).
Heck, just look at how easy YOU buy his story, and play it exactly the way Dobson and Bundy intended all along. "See, look porn is evil!! Ted Bundy is proof, he said so!"
Here's some facts about Ted Bundy:
What Dobson (and probably Bundy) wants you to believe: He was raised by a normal Christian family, but was corrupted by the evils of pornography.
The truth: Bundy was raised by his grandfather until the age of four. A man who was known to be abusive to people and animals. (Obviously a Christian household, according to James Dobson. Which is rather disturbing if you think about it.) This was a man who threw his daughter (Ted's Aunt) down the stairs for oversleeping. Bundy stated he looked up to his grandfather.
This is so often omitted by people who bring up Bundy. And with good reason. It doesn't play to the anti-pornography angle that they want to play.
