Well of course. But seen as it's completely irrational to accept the god proposition I've been stating the obverse truth of the same matter: That even if we accepted that evolution was false and there could be no possible natural explanation of DNA... that wouldn't mean there was any supernatural explanation or add one shred of evidence in favor of God.

Well, no. They don't have to. It would be better for them to say "I don't know" than make shit up. Like you said... there has been skepticism about gods long before anyone knew anything about evolution or natural explanations for life.
As far as I'm concerned the most intellectually honest and respectable theistic position possible is to simply admit that they have no evidence or logic in their favor and that they have to take it on faith. As Kant says, if it could be explained by reason there would be no room for faith.
It's batshit crazy and totally irrational. But admitting you're irrational is still more respectable than being equally irrational but pretending to have rational explanations when you clearly don't. Better no explanation at all than a misleading, fallacious or just outright terrible one. Better to say "I don't know. I just have faith." than to pull shit out of your ass.
