What's their motive? The potential rewards for breaking rank would be enormous.

There is a evolutionary agenda they are following.  Breaking rank gets them targeted.

I can vouch for this. During my PhD, I was writing a paper describing evidence that a mutation based evolutionary algorithm based on simulated annealing would be more practical than a genetic algorithm where you can't keep track of how many times a mutation has been evaluated. I showed the draft paper to my supervisor and he just sighed, put the paper down and left the room. I didn't know what I had done. No one had told me. So I sat there a little stunned and then these two heavies came in. I had seen them around but didn't know what their jobs were. I thought they were cleaners and was unsure why the other academic staff were so scared of them.

I started getting nervous when I noticed one of them had jump leads attached to a car battery. I still have scars on the soles of my feet. What's more, they didn't even say anything. It's so dangerous being in academia. You don't even know what is dogma and what isn't. So you need to play it safe. I once saw one 60 year old man being handcuffed and a black bag put over his head before being marched off to the janitor's cupboard to be waterboarded. I didn't even understand what his papers were about yet alone how he went against dogma. I never got to ask him because I never saw him again.
