He's a brilliant scientist who stands in the face of the scientific community and of power because he has truth on his side.

I know there are occasional mavericks who stand up to the scientific community and are eventually proven right, and those guys go down in history. But most mavericks who stand up to the scientific community turn out to be wrong, and are forgotten unless they were so ridiculous about it that they got famous for that. They laughed at the Wright Brothers, but they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
