Who says there ever was nothing? The Big Bang singularity was not "nothing" -- more like everything. It was highly-compressed matter/energy that expanded rapidly.
I suspect that the raw materials and energy that formed this universe have always existed in some form, and that creation from nothingness is not possible, even for an alleged god. If there were a sentient creator, it is not working from nothing at any point, because it cannot act without using energy; hence, energy/matter had to exist before a creator could even think of building something.
