Because it does make sense. God transcends time. As a 24 hour day was going by for him, eons were going by inside this universe.
That's just fucking stupid a day is the sun rising and setting in the bible, though now we know it only sets and rises on a particular part of earth at any one time.
This is what happens when in the light of science it shows the bible creation myths ( of which there are at least three in the bible) to be false, Christians try silly ways to make it fit.
