Here's my guess at what's happening:
Christians are circling the wagons. They read the news, and see where things are heading. So they've shifted from authoritarianism in regards to elected officials to libertarianism. They obviously still want to force their views on others, but on some level, they recognize they are now playing defense, so are accepting people who will help them protect what they have rather than less viable people who will try to expand their power.
I think the best example of how things progress in the US will always be the "Gay Agenda." They started out as libertarians. Kurt Loder telling the kids in the '90s "Hey, it's an alternative lifestyle! They just want to do their own thing!" And as they grew in strength, their message changed. Now, if you don't bake them a cake, or use XE for their pronoun, or pause to think about it before deciding on Trans-athletes, you're a bad person who should lose their job/company, and I guess be homeless and die?
The point being, as a groups power grows and wanes in their ability to dictate social norms, they shift from authoritarian to libertarian. You go from voting for people who just accept your existence, to voting for people who will enforce your views.
In the position of Authoritarians, Christians pick Bush. George loves Jesus, and Jesus loves George. Things start getting hairy, and Christians pick Trump. Trump is hardly christian, but they don't need him to be. They just need someone who will let them do their thing. It's a defensive choice meant to stop the bleeding.
