The fact that “We the people” has long since became “we nearly half of whom would wrap themselves in the flag and work with greater zeal to undermine the common interest than ever they would to oppose evil in the world personified” has never been more clearly displayed.

Democracy and civil society, and ultimate the nation itself as an effective agent of its own interests on the international stage, are more liable to be completely and irremediably undone by those who use faux patriotism as a weapon in domestic struggle than by anything else.   So it is with the US.
