RNA World explains it. It's just hard to confirm because it's trying to explain something that happened nearly 4 billion years ago. The evidence that could confirm or disconfirm it may no longer exist; but there's a scientific explanation for how it could have happened, regardless of whether we're ever able to know with reasonable certainty if it was exactly the case.

They did not know of DNA or molecular machines. They had limited knowledge of life.
