Where I come from and what I've personally seen the number of old people that die happy are FAR outnumbered by the number of old people that die sad and lonely and often in misery. You wanna role the dice, go right ahead, but don't be surprised when your misery far outweighs any amount of happiness that the morphine gives you.
Watching everyone of your friends die off. Watching your children possibly die, screw up, or just plain forget about you. The brutal pain that comes with arthritis, Parkinsons, Alzheimers and the plethora of diseases that await you in your 70s. Those drugs you're taking aren't any fun anymore because you can't do shit and all you do is sleep all day because your body is slowly breaking down and just doesn't have the energy anymore. All this while you die in obscurity thinking about the life you could've had and all the pain you could have avoided.
You wanna role the dice, be my guest. The odds are against you, and old age looks terrifying. Both of my grandmothers were praying for death at the end. One of them was the last one of her siblings to die. She had 9 brothers and sisters. you talk about loneliness.
Old age - it's all yours.
