If I recall my early religious RCC training, unbaptized babies end up in some sort of in-between place called Limbo. Sending a newborn to hell is possibly beyond the pale, even for the RCC.
And the Limbo hypothesis has been downplayed in recent years, most famously with this famous 2007 document, commissioned by John Paul II and signed off on by Pope Palpatine.
It doesn't totally dismiss the idea of a Limbo, but the Church does not (and probably cannot) pick a side.
