And so did my mother.

Shame on you.  That joke is almost as tasteless as:

Doctor:  'Mr. Smith, I'm afraid I have some bad news and some terrible news.'

Smith:  'Oh, dear!  What's the bad news?'

Doctor:  'You have terminal cancer.'

Smith:  'Oh, my god!! What's the terrible news?'

Doctor:  'You also have Alzheimers.'

Smith:  'Phew, that's a relief!  For a minute, I thought you were going to tell me I had cancer or something.'
