That's an ages-old argument: Nature or nurture?
Surely, both play a role.
Tesla is an interesting example. He may have been a real-life Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory). He was certainly a genius but also a crackpot. The guy fell in love with a pigeon and likely died a virgin. He was quite dysfunctional.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
