It's called "fear."
Absolutely.
When your living in a fantasy world where everything has a special purpose and you get to fly to la-la land when you pass away, your greatest threat is someone questioning it.
They attack atheists through fear. They want to keep their fantasy going for as long as possible. Someone who doesn't share such beliefs are threats to their delusions.
All I have to say is, tough! It's time to wake up. There is no god, there is no special purpose, the universe was not designed or created for us and there will be no other existence when we die.
Can't handle reality? Then run back to your silly church in fear. Oh and give us back our lightning rods, I'm sure your imaginary friend will protect your churches.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan
Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
