One defense for this nature is to wrap itself in a veneer of intellectualism, but in doing so, the person still knows God exists because of their conscience which is an integral part of their spiritual component (made in the image of God). Created spiritual being once created, never cease to exist; aka, the angels watched God laid out the foundation of the earth 4.5 bya, and as such, will always know of God forever.
Gnostic ignorance is a thing, ya know? It's the worst kind of ignorance, because it's the kind of ignorance that refuses to adjust itself to the truth.
