18 is the age of consent in California, therefore he is a statutory rapist. If he didn't think he was doing anything wrong, why did he falsify the age on the kid on paperwork?

16 is the age of consent here. In the Vatican the age of consent is 14 just so you know. Countries have different laws regarding sex.

Oh and I don't have any daughters, but my wifes best friend used to date a much older man when we started going out (she was a teenager and he was in his 40s) we used to go out to dinner together, never thought anything of it. They were happy.
