Especially about a sensitive subject like this.Yeah, Huggy Bear’s been posting here for years, and the fact that he still assumes that we’re a group of people whose beliefs can easily be lumped together speaks volumes about how little he’s bothered to learn about atheists.
And, just for the record, to further drive the point that we’re not just defending Harvey Milk because he’s gay, well, I have a bit more knowledge than the average person who’s just watched Milk does, but not that much riding on his past being stellar. A better example, and one a bit more germane to the Cosby issue is Kevin Spacey. He’s been in a Lot of great films, and I have to admit, he’s probably one of my favorite living actors. That said, when Anthony Rapp came out with his story about Kevin Spacey, I waited with baited breath to see if these allegations could be corroborated. And it turns out they did. He had a long-standing problem with preying on younger men that started long before I was even born. They reached a point where they had to stop production on The Usual Suspects for a couple days because he was "inappropriate" with one of the other actors. At least EIGHT people who worked on House of Cards with him accused him of sexual harrassment with one accusing him of rape. I have not been able to find ANY indication of the dozens of accusers lying or being part of some plot to bring him down for reasons. As a result, I believe the accusations are true.
I can't say the fact that he most likely has a long history of sexual assault has actually dissuaded me from enjoying roles he's in; Last week, I saw him in Margin Call and was a bit amuses that he, of all people, was playing the most consistently moral person in the room. My favourite film of the 1960s was directed by a rapist and dwells on the consequeneces of rape and abuse in a way that few films do even today, making it all the more surprising that, over a decade later, the director subjected a girl of about 13 to the same things that the heroine of that film is heavily implied to have gone through. That does not change the fact that the evidence points to them doing some horrible things. I love Kevin Spacey the actor, fuck Kevin Spacey the human being. It's not about how he fits in with our in-groups and out-groups for me; it's where the evidence leads.
