It's always a contest between those who want to hold to higher standards and those who want to take advantage of the opportunity to violate them. As with the tolerance paradox, that failure to be intolerant towards intolerance leads to an absence of tolerance, those who defect from the common good and its support, and those who do nothing to oppose them, simply hurts the common good in the long run. It's human nature to aggressively punish defectors, so if you feel the Republicans are defecting from civil and appropriate discourse, you should aggressively oppose them. If you don't vote, you simply make it easier for the common denominator to sink ever lower.
