I'll bet you fooled more than me. I guess you could call a potential god arising in consciousness a 'higher' power, but if you have a handle on what you believe which permits you not to hold it literally, do you think it is a good thing that so many other believers believe in something kind of out there? I mean, maybe as atheists we are apt to be too reflexively dismissive, but is believing that obedience to an all powerful all knowing judging god is the true meaning of existence really all that uplifting?
I don't call our consciousness a higher power, because all it is, is who we are and there are conscious people doing horrifying things all over the place. Nothing "higher" about them. There is nothing "out there" about believing in God. It is the only logical assumption that exists.
