Actually we most certainly are blood and gut creatures, that is obvious. We also have conscious self awareness, intelligence, emotions and the other subjective states you named. This is not an either/or issue.

Maybe you will answer my question, since the other two atheists I asked couldn't. What force of nature would care if we had a sex drive and a will to live? The force of nothing with no intelligence?

We have them because those simple creatures which endured and evolved to become what we see today, though of course some organisms which never adopted sexuality have also endured since asexual recreation is also possible. However those which recreate sexually enjoy the capacity to differentiate to better exploit opportunities afforded by the environment. By all means go on thinking it is a gift of the great sky father if you like but surely you understand and would agree with this much.

But if you prefer to think this 'force' of yours would not be capable of constructing matter in such a way that the capacity for organic chemistry could emerge from its inorganic properties, that is your business. I don't think any such force is required but I do think the capacity is present in the physicality of matter for life to emerge from its chemical properties. My inability to prove that now is nothing by comparison with your progress in demonstrating there is any such force involved in the emergence of life.

It might be helpful for you to lay out what -would- be a valid explanation for all the pain and suffering in the world?  If the only category you can find here..that you would accept, are the articles of your faith..then you are not actually looking for any explanation of all the pain and suffering in the world, and no explanation of all the pain in suffering in the world would be valid to you unless it were a restatement of the articles of your faith.

But you have to hand it to her for challenging us to take responsibility for the pain and suffering in the world.  After all we're not the ones positing an all powerful, supremely loving force.  The lack of explanation isn't our problem, it's theirs.  Obviously.

There is pain and suffering for many reasons.  No force has shown it cares to stop it.
