If the amount of pain and suffering on this rock exists as an intentional plot to make us better, then doesn't every improvement we make on this rock to alleviate that suffering make the soul mill that much less effective? God used to teach us a lesson with polio, but then we eradicated it - is he up there cooking up some new disease to hit us with, or is he giving up?
How will we ever get our souls to the point of optimal refinement if we keep improving our earthly lives?
The notion that suffering somehow cleanses or refines us is sickening.
