The word 'intelligent' is ambiguous. In common language, it connotes exceptional intelligence, but I gather you are using it in its most basic sense of being capable of behavior, including machine-like intelligence. All life is intelligent in the sense that it can have an automatic reaction to stimuli. Computers and biological viruses can do the same, even though they aren't, strictly speaking, alive.
The way you phrased your initial assertion that intelligence is required for life to exist seemed to heavily imply that you were talking about the godlike intelligence of a creator deity, not the perishable and very limited intelligence common to bacteria and humans.
