If you define a "hero" as only bloodshed and death, then that is only one aspect of our species. A hero to me can also be someone who makes your life easier.
The first World War was called "The War To End All Wars". So is our species goal always to seek more violence or less? Is our goal to seek more illness or less? Is our goal to always sweat? Or can it be a collective effort to avoid more harm? Physical protection is part of our species, but thinking of ways to do that and to make life less stressful on future species requires brains more than physical force.
My mom was a hero. Not only to me, but thousands.
So much for staying on point. *sigh*
And, to edify you just a tad, WWI was called 'The First World War' before it was called 'The War To End All Wars'. (If you aren't going to stick to the topic, I don't see why I should).
