Immortality for tribal Jews (as in most tribal cultures) does not consist in personally living forever. It consists in a continuity of male off-spring and descendants.
Adam (in the story) had that. He was immortal, in that culture ... so no. He didn't die. Individuality (as an idea) did not arise in Hebrew culture until after the Exile.
