Human beings can only decide what is going to die so that they can live, and....maybe.. the manner of it's death and quality of it's life. Not -whether- something dies so they can live. It's just not something we have the sort of mastery over we'd like.
I'm raising my kids not to eat anything they wouldn't kill..anything they wouldn't touch, and grab, and dig into, and slice into chunks..etc etc etc. To eat their consciences, as it were. For my youngest daughter, that's looking something like pescetarianism. The girl just loves fish. She's from florida, I've always had fish, she loves fish. She's merciless to fish. Not too keen on hurting or killing or eating other animals.
As a vegan, I'd be happy if people just stopped eating more meat than is dietarily beneficial. When a 300-lb guy tells me he needs that Big Mac, I feel that's selfish-- it's an insult to the cow that died for him to be 301 lbs.
See, we talk about whether we could feed the world. But when we have about 100 million obese motherfuckers in the states-- how many starving African families would all that extra food feed? Like. . . all of them, right there, I'm guessing.

My kids eat fish too. I used to call them "fish killers" sometimes to see if I could make them feel guilty enough to take a break, but this particular issue is clearly never going to gain traction.
