Hence the impasse. Unwilling to countenance his own ignorance, and incapable of accepting a god that made him from a monkey - he instead hopes to negotiate with reality itself.
To negotiate with reality suggest he is willing to give something, in the hope that reality would be take pity and give something back. It would be a vain hope but it at least shows the beginning of humility.
He is unwilling to give, and think reality would be daunted by his “faith” and capitulate, when reality can not be bothered with noticing his existence, much less his “faith”.
