This star trek is great entertainment.
It's silly as hell as a prequel to TOS, but they are trying to bring it around:
The uniforms from the Enterprise (Starfleet has a new uniform layout for each ship?? Kinda defeats the purpose)...
The hologram idiocy (Pike doesn't like holograms and they screw up starfleet ships? What about Klingon ships and their holograms?)...
The spore drive that will never again be used for ethical reasons...
Spock's adopted sister?? Why couldn't she just have been raised by some other Vulcan?? Why did it have to be Spock's father, Sarek? Just to appease fanboys? bah!
Season 1 was ok as a story arc, unlike most of other Trek series where you get one-episode stories and then things kinda reset to the same status quo.
Season 2 is going along the same path, while trying to have some sort of self-contained story in each episode.
I never understood what people see in DS9. Sure, it's alright, but there's little to no sense of the exploration part that's great about Trek. There's only politics and human/alien relationships. There are seasons dedicated to preparing for some war. Sure, sure, the socio-political commentary that was the trademark of star trek was there in full and is only a bit in Discovery... For that, we get The Orville. Seth is doing a good job with this one.
DS9 had some serializing, and some exploration, but the characters, the war, etc. were fantastic. No villain in sci-fi or fantasy is as good as Gul Dukat, just sayin'. It's rare that you get a villain that seems like a real person. That you can not only sympathize with, but almost side with because the lines between good and bad become so blurred with his character... until the over the top end of it. Plus space Jesus was a little annoying, lol. TNG is a series where everything is almost perfect, the characters are perfect, they perform their duties perfectly, etc. It's a utopia in space. DS9 on the other hand is a series where things are darker, more bleak, and where we see the characters act the most human. DS9 isn't really a naval drama with exploration at the helm like the others, but it's just as good for other reasons. STD on the other hand, at least in the first season, didn't give the exploration factor, and it didn't do a very decent job handling the Klingon war. Season 2 however is doing a decent job with the exploration stuff.
The Orville is awesome. Seth MacFarlane has worked on Star Trek Enterprise, so he knows a little about what makes Star Trek tick. Plus adding the comedy element gives such a show an incredibly fresh feeling, instead of feeling like a rehash of TNG or something.
